New LDS Newsroom Web Site

Last night we went live with a refresh of the Church newsroom web site. The old one is here, and the new one is here.
This is an example of a complete re-write of a web site with new technology, new content and a new supporting content management process. This solution took only a few months and, going forward, requires no development to update content.
The audience of the web site is “news media, opinion leaders and the public.”
We’re still working on a few bugs so be patient with us.

Hey, great work on the new design, it’s very ‘clean’.
Since the RSS feed link has been moved to the footer, it might be worth adding RSS autodiscovery to the page. In fact, it’s probably worth doing it regardless.

When will the new lds.org be launched? The beta was featured on the home page for quite a while, but has recently been removed.

I can’t make any announcements on LDS.ORG, but it’s getting very close. It’s still there at http://beta.lds.org for you to peruse.
The customers we worked with for newsroom are very pleased.

Speaking of RSS, it’d be great if the LDS Gems had an RSS. It’s great over email, but it’d be better in RSS.

Joel -
First off, congratulations on the new blog. I love it and the willingness to be open about the Church’s IT direction, plans, etc.
The new newsite looks great. I’m curious to know what content management system you’re using. I’m looking at Xoops for some personal business projects. (Xoops — http://www.xoops.org — is an OpenSource content managment system).
Also, I’m quite impressed with the openness concerning sharing of spreadsheets, databases, etc. to help get the work done on a local level.
Having been a ward clerk twice (and a long time IT professional), we were always looking for ways to get the work done which simply couldn’t be done with MIS. I haven’t had as much experience with MLS. I moved from our ward a few months after it was installed there. I’ve most recently been serving as a YM president and so haven’t had as much direct involvement in it.
And since I’ll soon be moving to Kaysville, UT, I would be very much interested in attending one the Church’s technology seminars in SLC.

Hi Kim. I don’t think Cameron worked on this specifically.
Rick. We use Vignette for content management. We’ve looked (and are looking) at other alternatives all the time.
