I think its interesting that you quote Josiah Royce. His interpretation of the purpose of religion and his book on Christianity are prime examples of elaborate partial truths.
I am intrigued by his teachings of global consciousness.
Can I ask what sparked your quote? Are you a fan of Mr. Royce, or did you enjoy the quote?
[Joel: I just liked the quote. I think his point on our failing to become more reverent is obvious. I was intrigued by his point that despite wonderous learning we are not becoming more profound. I'm not sure I even understand what that means, but there is a depth of understanding or of insight that I think he implies is missing in our collective intellectual progression.]

I thought that was the quote Elder Holland used during the devotional to ICS. I have it in my notes anyway. I think it is a great quote. I especially agree with the idea that we have become more “clever” but not “more profound”.
