They thought it was associated with devil worship and had seen one too many firesides of the kind of guys who used to go on the circuit about rock music, D&D, etc. I still found a way to play as often as I could and haven't once made an offering to Beelzebub. I love being able to demand "geek" as a login name (if I'm not allowed to choose) and justify it by stating that it's basically derived directly from my name.
